Chapter five

STICKS

Fuck, Pong is getting married, I thought as I watch them whisper to each other, completely unaware of the fact anyone else is around anymore. I’m happy for them, don’t get me wrong, but it’s hard to be really happy when I’m miserable with my own situation.

My eyes dart across the table to where Jessica is sitting. We still haven’t talked, and I know I was running short on time. Tonight is the beginning of the end. Before the end of the night, I will know where my future is headed. I have a pretty good idea of what that path will look like, but I also know I don’t want to travel it alone. I want a spunky girl with colorful hair traveling alongside me. If only I can get her to stop avoiding me.

My mind thinks back to that night at Christmas when I first felt her soft lips against mine, as she grinded on my lap. She was as into it as I was, until she wasn’t. Then she ran. And since then, everything has been… awkward.

I miss our easygoing friendship, and the way I could talk to her. I miss Jess, but after that night, I could no longer deny that I want more from her too. It’s just too bad that she seems content to ignore my existence.

“You’re staring again.” Sharpie elbows me in the ribs, and I turn my gaze to him.

“Did you ever just feel like everything you wanted was right there and you just couldn’t reach it?”

He looks at me like I have two heads before he shakes his own and simply says, “No.”

I let out a frustrated sigh as my eyes find their way back to hers, just in time to see her glance away.

A small flare of hope ignites inside of me, just like it always does when I catch her looking at me. Hoping that maybe she misses me too, maybe she wants me like I want her. Could it be that she doesn’t know how to bridge that divide we’ve created either? How does one hot as hell kiss ruin such a great friendship? Does the thought of us being together really scare her that much that she’s created an ocean between us?

“Seattle is on the clock.” The announcer’s voice rings out, making me realize I was still staring awkwardly at Jess.

Shit. I need to stop doing that. What I really need to do is man up and talk to her, set shit right between us. Even if it means we could only be friends, I could live with that, right?

Maybe.

Despite my best efforts, my eyes go back to her, and I have to force them away, as my lips remember the fateful night that broke our friendship. The way she tasted when our lips met, how she’d moaned and arched into me, rubbing her warm heat on my hard length.

Shit.

I need to get my head on straight, any minute now my name could be called, and I’ll be drafted.
